The Experience of Low-income Students at Elite Institutions
Low-income students have been arriving at elite college campuses at growing numbers each fall.While a growing body of literature has focused on the barriers that low-income students face in applying to college and arriving on campus, there is limited research on how these students navigate the campuses that they arrive in. Through a combination of both quantitative data from Gates Millennium Scholars and interview and survey data from Odyssey Scholars at the University of Chicago, I find that while students are usually provided with the financial resources they need to succeed, social and academic resources often do not meet their needs.
